Not just a greeting–an identity.
A friend asked me once: why do you people say "how are you?" when you don't want to know?
She was right, as usual.
I never did slow down long enough to take heed of the importance of such things to friends.
The scripts were to run for a long time yet.
When I finally had the same experience, I (as is habit) did the work in both directions, and switched to "hey" as both greeting and response.
In a very real way, I put someone who mattered most, very last.
How 'r ya is the form of a question with none of the function. Connection performed. Connection avoided.
